I’ve been playing with MX5’s for over 7 years now! dammmnnn.. that’s a long time!
I’ve had many summers and winters :S of roof down action. Don’t get me wrong I love it, I really do.
But… after a while (3+ years of roof down action) the fun factor isn’t there anymore…
Plus in Traffic the HOT sun just makes you sweat like a bull in a china shop. *TASTY*
The main reason for the swap is the fact.
- The car looks so much better.
- More secure.
- Can make the car feel more solid.
- THE MAIN FUNCTION.. Your faster on track due to the AERO.
In my mk1 you could really notice the difference between roof down and running a hard top the top speed down the back straight at Snetterton was quite abit different.
The big downfall to a hardtop for a NC / Mk3 is price! HOLY COW!!!!!
Mk1/mk2 hardtops range from; £200 for a dog to £300 for a mintier!
Mk3….. THE PRICE!!! WOW!! It’s seems to be around £600 for a good condition hardtop but wait….. If you want a fitting kit your looking at £350 brand new.
Or if someone sells one with the hardtop £700-800 all in. It really hurts my wallet!
I’ll be removing the Mk3 softtop totally… Which involves a little bit of drilling as you need to remove the frame from the main section as it’s all apart of the seat beat mounting.
Did I mention… nothing it as easy as a Mk1 or Mk2 … Sorry the only thing I’ve found easier is clutch changes! Far more room in a Mk3 to get all the top bolts around the gearbox! Anyone who has done this knows you need like 500 extension bars.
